About Gordon Dykstra's Criminal Law Book: "Am I Going to Jail?"
As a criminal lawyer working in the Fraser Valley, BC, the most often asked question by persons who are charged with a criminal offence is “Am I Going to Jail?” As with so many questions the answer to that question is often not clear. It depends on many things. Things like, how serious was the offence, was anybody hurt, have you done something like that before, how old are you, and what are the chances that you will change your ways.
If you are charged with an offence such as a DUI/impaired driving, theft, fraud, assault, spousal assault, drug charges, or any other crime, knowing something about the process that you face, the help you can get and what has to be proved is going to help you deal with an offence and the court system. Gordon Dykstra, a criminal lawyer serving Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Surrey, White Rock and throughout the Lower Mainland, wrote his book "Am I Going to Jail" so that you may be able to deal with the process and know something about what will happen so that you can know what to expect. This will also let you know what is the best thing to do and why you should do it.
The main thing that you will want to know and will learn from reading my book, is that your chances of not going to jail are good. The next thing that you will learn and need to know is that you should do everything you can to defend yourself. The cost to you of letting the police, the prosecutors and the court system deal with it without defending yourself will more than likely leave you a poor person for the rest of your life.
So, one of the first things that you will want to know is; what will be the likely result of a court process for you. The court process results in a jail term and/or a criminal record. There are many ways to avoid both of those and you should look at all the ways to do that. You should not only look at ways to avoid a jail term or a criminal record but you should also take all the steps you need to take to avoid a jail term or a criminal record. But if all else fails, the court process may result in a criminal record. A criminal record will hamper you for the rest of your life. It will make you work at jobs you won't really like.
A criminal record will also make your income for a lifetime a lot less than if you had no criminal record. The first thing you will want to look at is why a criminal record is not a good thing and why you should do all that you can not to get one; even if you are charged with a criminal offence. The following headings will be talked about.
