Most persons have to work for a living and to work for living you need a job. Most future bosses or their forms ask if you have a criminal record. The better the job the more persons want that job. If there are several persons asking for the job and you're the only one to have a criminal record, there is not much chance that you will get that job. The reason for that is clear. Your future boss wants to know that you will be a team player. A criminal record shows your future boss that at least at one time you did not play for the team but played for yourself. And so the good jobs will likely go to those who do not have criminal record.
The best paying jobs are those jobs where you tell other persons what they should do or where you care for persons who have problems that need to be fixed. Those are jobs like doctors, nurses, accountants, brokers, lawyers, financial advisors, teachers and those kinds of jobs. Persons doing those jobs make much more than $25.00 per hour. But the persons who do those jobs have a union to make sure that the persons doing those jobs are able to do them and can be trusted to be a team player. So for those kinds of jobs you need to be able to join that union. To be able to join those unions you need to be trusted. If you have a criminal record that shows that you cannot be trusted you are not going to get in that union. With a few exceptions those unions do not let persons with criminal records join. So it is not likely that with a criminal record you will get a job like that.
There are, of course, many jobs that a lot of persons will not apply for. But those jobs are jobs that pay less. Those jobs are not much fun and are hard work. Because there are not many persons asking for jobs that pay less and are hard work, even if you have a criminal record, you will have a good chance to get that low paying hard work job. But good paying jobs start at $25.00 per hour and less paying jobs pay only $15.00 per hour. Over a lifetime the difference of income say from age 25 to 65 is forty years. In forty years you will work 83,200 hours and at $10.00 per hour that will come to a loss of $832,000.00. So that is a huge amount of income loss.
The next question is why would anyone take so much away from you for making a mistake. To answer that question you need to understand that Canada is a country where most persons expect to live a peaceful and safe life. All together we want a just and peaceful society. If you commit an offence you show that you are not on the team that wants a just and peaceful society for all. The persons who are the victims of that offence want something done to stop you from doing it again. They want you to change. Many persons think that the way to make you change is to punish you. There are two ways that you can be punished. Your freedom can be taken away. That is you are put in jail. The other way is to warn others that you are not a team player and that others should have nothing to do with you. That is, you are given a criminal record. That is a notice to all of the world that you are not to be trusted.
You have to understand who it is that wants to put you in jail. You have to learn who it is that wants you to have a criminal record. But mostly you have to understand how the court process works, what has to be proved, how proof can be attacked, and if proof is made out, what can be done to still stay out of jail and sometimes still not get a criminal record. The following will try to answer those things for you.
