Q: The police arrested me – do I need to talk to them or answer their questions?
A: No. You don’t have to say anything except tell them your name. In fact, you’re better off saying nothing until you talk to a lawyer. Don’t say anything to anyone – not a police officer or somebody in the jail cell. You never know who you’re talking to or who is listening. In Canada, you are innocent until proven guilty. This means you don’t have to say anything or explain anything to the police or anyone else.
