In 1982 the Canadian Government enacted the Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms (the Charter) which sets out as the title suggests - rights and freedoms of Canadians.
It was a seminal enactment in Canada, and had a significant impact on the criminal law because it codified several rights available to every person charged with a crime in Canada.
